Student 'A' selects a number between 500 and 1000. Student 'B' mentally subtracts 9 from this number and tells 'A', who writes it down where 'B' cannot see it. Student 'B' then subtracts 8 from this answer and 'A' again records the response. This is continued, with 'B' subtracting 7, then 6, etc. down to 1, then starting again at 9.
