TERM/PHRASE CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
Alternative Energy Source is a resource term which refers to alternatives to such 'conventional' sources as hydroelectric and nuclear power, including, for example, solar, wind, hydrogen, and tidal power.
Anticlinal Trap is a geologic structure which is dome shaped and contains layers of rock, often trapping oil and gas
Bank is a shallow area which is located on the continental shelf and contains many fish
Biomass is a type of energy which is produced by living things
Bitumen is a heavy oil which along with water, covers each grain of sand in oil sands
Clear Cutting is a forest harvesting technique in which all trees in an area are cut at one time
Coal is a type of fossil fuel which was formed from undecayed vegetable matter laid down in an ancient swamp
Concentrate is an ore which has much of the waste rock removed
Drywell is a drilled hole which is in search of oil or gas but does not produce
Exploratory Well is a drilled hole which is used to assess the amount of a liquid or gas below the surface
Forester is a person who is trained in the care and use of forest areas
Fossil Fuel is a mineral which can be burned to produce energy
Geothermal Energy is a type of energy which is produced in the earth's interior
Groundfish is a type of fish which lives and feeds near the bottom of the sea; includes cod and sole
Hardwood is a type of wood which is produced from broadleaved trees such as maple, oak, and elm
Human Resource is a general term which refers to people, especially the skills and abilities they have
Land Reclamation is a process which restores land or transforms it for human use
Mineral is a valuable substance extracted from rocks by mining which is naturally formed, solid, and inorganic with a characteristic chemical composition and often a particular crystaline shape
Natural Resource is a general term which refers to an item of value found on the land or in the waters of a country
Natural Vegetation is a type of plant which grows in an area in the absence of human influences
Non-Metalic Mineral is a type of mineral which yields non-metals such as salt, potash and asbestos when processed
Non-Renewable Resource is a type of resource which can only be used once; cannot be replaced
Nuclear Fusion is a process in which hydrogen nuclei are joined together to produce heat
Nuclear Fission is a process in which atoms are split to produce heat
Open-Pit Mining is a type of mining in which ore near the surface is found by digging a large hole
Ore is a type of rock which contains enough valuable minerals to make mining profitable
Overburden is soil and rock which is found above a mineral deposit and must be be removed before open-pit or strip mining can begin
Phytoplankton is a microscopic plant which lives in the sea
Renewable Resource is a type of resource which replaces itself unless badly mismanaged
Reserve is a type of resource which has not yet been developed
Selective Cutting is a forest harvesting technique in which only trees of a certain type, size, and quality are cut
Shared Resource is a resource which is shared by countries; an international river
Soft Fruits is a type of fruit which is easily damaged by frost
Softwood is a type of wood which is produced by needle-leaved trees
Zooplankton is a tiny animal which lives in the sea and eats phytoplankton
