REGION TERMS

TERM/PHRASE CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
Artificial Boundary is a political boundary which does not follow a natural feature
Biome is an area which has a characteristic geographic and climatic pattern that supports characteristic animal and plant populations
Bioregion is a type of region which is defined by its natural and human characteristics, thus constituting a natural ecological community
Boundary is a line which is used to divide two or more areas, either artificially, or based on a natural feature
Ecumene is a type of region which is permanently settled
Functional Region is a type of region which is usually centered on a place
Geographic Region is a multi-factor region which is determined by both natural and human factors
Hemisphere is a type of division of the earth's surface which creates the four spheres of the earth (Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western)
Hinterland is a type of region which includes the area surrounding an urban area that supplies the raw materials and acts as a market
Homogeneous Region is a type of region in which distinctive characteristics are common to all parts of the region
Region is the general term for an area which is similar within and different from surrounding areas
Regionalism is a situation in which a country is divided into small administrative units that have significant powers
Single-Factor Region is a type of region which is determined on the basis of only one thing
Time Zone is a type of division of the earth's surface which usually extends across 15 degrees longitude and establishes a unifom time
Transition Zone is an area in which the characteristics of one region gradually blends into the characteristics of the next.
