S.E.I.U. MAGAZINE ARTICLE - CAMPAIGN TO GET STALKER'S LAW IN CANADA

Victims For Justice was founded in 1993 during the court trial of Pamela's Stewin's murderer. There was an outrage in the Community at large when people heard of the leniant sentencing. During the trial, a grassroots movement was developed. Family members of the victim, friends, and co-workers from CAW Local 1973 GM trim plant formed an alliance to give support to the victim's family and to protest the sentence that was handed down by the judge. The above pictures depict an obvious dissatisfaction with the sentencing. Family members, friends and co-workers decided to publicly express their outrage with a protest march outside the court house. This was a grassroots formation of Victims for Justice in its infant stages. This demonstated to the average citizen that the powers of a combined community spirit and effort can make a difference. Initially, Victims for Justice raised awareness of the inequalities afforded to women in the court room as well enlightening the general public and the government about the plight of victims and secondary victims in our community.

Victims for Justice participated in a Victim's Day Rally on Parliament Hill on September 1995 with a diverse cross-section of victim's groups across Canada. The premise behind this rally was to address the Justice Department regarding concerns of crime victims. Since this date Victims for Justice have worked for the rights of victims by hosting workshops and forums to educate the general public and to provide resources for victims of crime through our web site. We network with victim's groups across Canada in our ongoing efforts to work on behalf of victims of crime. VFJ has prepared and delivered submissions to the Justice Department, and continue to work in Community collaboratives with Service providers to be vigilant in reinterating to our members of government the inadequacies that are still present in the services presently offered to victims and work with the government to remedy the situation.
