Netscape Communicator Installed

Netscape being one of the most popular Internet browser packages out there. Its configuration is pretty straightforward and grouped into a section called Preferences... (Located in the Edit menu). To get started modifying the Preferences you'll be required to be in your profile within Netscape.

• Mail Identity
• Mail Servers
• News Servers
• Composer

Click on Edit, and then to Preferences...

Navigator

In the initial screen you can modify Netscape's Home Page Location. We suggest having WINCOM's URL in the Location field.

• Location: http://www.wincom.net/

Mail Identity

In order for any of the Netscape abilities to work properly you need to have the Identity filled in.

• Your name: (your name)
  
• Email Address: username@wincom.net
  
• Reply-To Address: optional
  
• Organization: optional
  
• Signature File: optional

Mail Servers

In order to retrieve email from our system you'll need to have this Mail Servers screen filled in.

• Incoming mailserver: smtp.wincom.net
  
• Outgoing (SMTP) Server: smtp.wincom.net
  
• Outgoing Mail Server User Name: your username/wincom.net
  Note: username is full email address (divided by a slash)
• Secure Socket Layer (SSL): Never

If you need to modify or add an Incoming Mailserver the following screens will guide you.

If you click on the Add... or Edit... button, you have a screen like above. You'll want to fill in the blanks with the following:

• Server name: smtp.wincom.net
  
• Server Type: POP3
  
• User Name: your username/wincom.net
  Note: username is full email address (divided by a slash)

The checkmark boxes are convience features, the usual setup is as the screen shot shows.

Click the top of the Mail Server Properties screen on the tab called POP. Within this tab it is advised to have this feature called "Leave messages on server." turned off. WINCOM does reserve the right to charge for excess space used on the Mail and Web Servers.

News Servers

Now clicking on the Category: Newsgroup Servers you should have a screen looking like the one above. I you have something other you can modify the existing entry by clicking on Edit... and the next screen shot will define that is to be modified. Likewise with not having an entry at all, selecting Add... you'll receive a screen exactly like below.

The above screen shot is basically filled as follows:

• Server: news.wincom.net
  
• Port: 119
  
• no checks in the boxes for SSL and Username and Password.

Composer

In order to create, modify, publish a WebSite to WINCOM's Webserver the above screen should be filled out as follows:

• Maintain Links
  
• Keep Images with page
  
• URL to Publish to: ftp://ftp.wincom.net/public_html/
  
• URL to Browse to: http://www.wincom.net/~(your username)/
